Dengue campaign summer-fall 2007 for Coco and vicinity:

Aedesaegypti... What's that????

Biological Information

The Aedes mosquito is generally recognised by its prominent white stripes down the abdomen, although sometimes other mosquitoes with similar markings will be mistaken for the Aedes mosquito.

The Aedes mosquito is found in most of the tropics, especially prevalent in regions such as South-East Asia and Central Africa.. AND in Central America! It could also be widely found in Mexico and the south-eastern United States.

Breeding and Habitation

According to the United States CDC travellers' page, the Aedes mosquito's peak active feeding times are just after dawn and in the late afternoon until a few hours after nightfall.
The Aedes mosquito, like most, prefers to breed in stagnant water, such as that in flower vases, buckets and gutters, but they can also breed in toilet bowls and wet floors if they are not cleaned or flushed for a long time. The Aedes mosquito breed just as well in urban residences as they do in the jungle, SO IT IS NOT SAFE to assume that there is a lower chance of suffering bites if you do not venture near the jungle.

There is NO vaccine to prevent dengue fever, which has severe flu-like symptoms and can sometimes be fatal (Dengue Haemorragic Fever).  If this mosquito bite one infected person and all other person it will bite will be contaminated!!!!!

Chorrotega (Nicoya Peninsula): 2,192 cases reported into the public health system up to week #25; 32% of the country..

In the Canton of Carillo: Officialy reported cases this year: 207

Reports from Ministerio de Salud confirm that the Dengue fever infections in Coco area is 4 times higher than last year at the same time. The Lions Club is very much involved this year for the control of the breeding spots of the mosquitoes and in spraying the most vulnerable zones. On the 28th and 29th of June a garbage collection was done in several barrios of Coco. During the week of July 2nd with the financial help of the Lions Club through volunteers donations, the Ministerio de Salud is spraying in the village.

An important cleaning campaign and spray was done on July 19,20,21,22. Thanks to all donnators and people that help.
